This food additive is banned in many countries, but remains legal in the United States.

It's found in many citrus flavored drinks, such as Gatorade and Mountain Dew. It keeps the fruity flavor mixed into the drink.

Brominated vegetable oil (BVO) was originally patented as a flame retardant.

Studies show it can produce reproductive and behavioral problems.

BVO was banned in the US in 1970, but was given interim approval to return as a food stabilizer a few years later. BVO is banned throughout Europe and in Japan, yet the FDA does not consider it an important enough to re-evaluate it's interim approval all these years later.
